A study has predicted that King’s College Chapel will be underwater by 2050.

Despite being far inland, sustainability experts at DriveElectric warn that Central Cambridge could be at risk of severe flooding in a few decades. Rising sea levels around the UK are widely predicted in the coming decades, meaning the flood risk of places like Cambridge are getting increasingly high.

The study, published last week (24/01), also predicted what global landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, The Green Lake in Austria, and De Grote Market in Belgium would look like.

The images were produced by AI when asked by researchers what landmarks might look like if we don’t tackle climate change. They stated “these images depict the extreme potential effects climate change might have on both our human and natural landscapes.”

DriveElectric’s sustainability researchers warned: “Earth is at a crossroads as the global temperature rises and climate change unleashes extreme effects, such as flooding, droughts and wildfires.”

They added: “Now, more than ever, greater implementation of green practices and increased sustainability to protect the planet is essential.”

The study compiled a list of significant landmarks in OECD countries and UK regions, then researched each landmark to see how they might be affected by climate change in the future. Where research for the specific landmark was not available, they used climate change concerns for the area in which the landmark is located.

The study comes after rowers were barred from starting their usual pre-term training camps at the start of the year by flooding of the River Cam (08/01). Storm Henk caused extremely high river levels, preventing rowers from getting their boats out on the river and blocking roads.
